The American Bald Eagle is one of the most regal-appearing birds of prey found in North America. We had the good fortune of living near one of their most popular wintering grounds for over twenty years. Each winter, Homer, Alaska is home to over 300 bald eagles who weather the cold on and around the Homer spit, a five-mile gravel bar that juts into Kachemak Bay at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula. During the summer months the eagles disperse up and down the peninsula to nest and raise their young. Unlike the rest of the United States, the eagle population of Alaska is healthy and thriving. It is not uncommon to see one of these majestic birds soaring overhead or diving the streams and rivers for salmon or trout. Getting close to these wary animals is tricky, however, and it isn't often one can get near enough to capture the ferocious detail of their features. Weighing up to 14 pounds with a wingspan of more than six feet, they are indeed impressive to observe and photograph. This portfolio captures some of their wildest qualities. |
